History of Bahamas Harbour Island

Colorful Bahamamian house on Harbour Island

Harbour Island, or Briland as local residents refer to it, is a quaint colonial village of houses stretching from the highest point of the island to the shore. The Island is only three miles long and half a mile wide and boasts its world famous powder pink sand beach as far as your eye can see.

Historically, this island is older than most people are aware. The Island's first settlement was founded before the United States was even a nation. Its resourceful residents made their way in the world as shipbuilders, fishermen and farmers. While the island itself has un-farmable soil, Brilanders were given land on Eleuthera to farm in 1783. To this day, much of the original grant is still being utilized.

By the 1800's, "Dunmore Town", once the capital of the Bahamas, had became both a noted shipyard and sugar refinement center. The Islanders were happy to acquire other valuable skills which contributed to the developement and notoriety of their tiny rural island. Upon the advent of prohibition, Harbour Island became very popular indeed!

Today, this fisherman's paradise is recognized for its intimate resorts, warm Briland Hospitality, quaint New England architecture and world renowned pink sand beach.
